penang recollections...

it's general knowledge time! guess wat these sticks are used for??TaDaa! Cracking the shells of 'pang-gang' flowers crab at this seafood restaurant @ bt tambun near penang butterworth some distance awae from my grandma's kampung. YaYYY!!! a few yrs ago when we were there we had these grilled crabs which i could never forget so i wanted them again. But then initially we ordered the wrong cooking method for the flower crabs. i tot "chui" in hokkien means grilled but apparently not. it's steamed. and so the crabs came in soya sauce covered with ginger. nice too but not quite the taste...
So we ordered MORE flower crabs..."pang-gang" please.
they dun use those advanced iron nutcracker tools we use here. neither do u they give u the sticks if you eat steamed or other kinds of saucey crabs. won't wanna get the sticks sticky of cos. hmm..okie the photo doesn't give justice to how nice it tastes... but flower crabs really do taste the best when grilled..the sea-salty sweetness of the flesh just coats your tongue. and u get this 香喷喷 feeling in your mouth lingering after tat! i mean by right steaming is supposed to bring out the freshness in seafood..

but trust me..rubbing a little salt and grilling them over a charcoal fire is the wae to go. i haven't seen grilled crabs anywhere else before tho'.. so guess i can only get then here if i bbq them myself..but then again it ain't easy getting live flower crabs since "flower crabs should be cooked immediately after they are killed"...words of my grandfather always rang when i eat my flower crabs...

erp why am i tokking this wae about food as tho i'm a foodie? uhh not all food lah...i just like gnawing my wae through most edible crustaceans...

on a side note...these are cocoa from the plantation at grandma's kampung...
